Building a home for retirement can come with some unique characteristics.

A small neat Florida home - owned by a happy former Ohioan.Being able to build a dream home in preparation for retirement is a milestone worth celebrating. Many people save and plan during the duration of their adult lives in order to have a comfortable and worry-free home. As aging occurs, there are special considerations that must be made when determining where one will live. If you are considering building a home in which to spend your post-retirement years, there are several design elements to keep in mind.

It may be tempting to go big or go home. However, ask yourself if you want to be responsible for cleaning or maintaining a 3,000 square foot home or one that fits just right. It’s a nice thought to be able to have a room for every one of the kids or grandchildren to stay in, but balance those needs with realistic ones. How often do you have company that stays for an extended period of time? If it’s just once or twice a year, one extra bedroom or space may be sufficient versus multiple spaces.

Safety is always a big priority as progression into the golden years commences.

  • Rugs add a feel and mood to open spaces but can be safety hazards. Plan for slip-proof mats or go with a low-pile carpet.
  • Have you thought about doorknobs? Doorknobs are minor technical details often overlooked. Lever-style hardware is easier to turn and maintain.
  • Adequate lighting is necessary in entry areas. Easy to reach and responsive light switches are preferable, especially if you come home with your hands full!
  • Be mindful of stairs. Even though the two story winding staircase looks attractive, will it be practical long term? If you do go for stairs, be sure they are well-lit and properly positioned with handrails.

It’s good to keep the future in mind as you build a space that is usable for the long-term.
